Trash Can Placement Basics

Every city has its own rules, but the basics are pretty similar, and they really do help things go smoothly for everyone. Putting your cans out the night before keeps you ahead of those early routes that sometimes move faster than expected. Leaving a few feet of space between cans gives the truck enough room to grab them cleanly without bumping into cars, or other objects and it also keeps mailboxes clear so your mail carrier can still do their job without having to work around obstacles.

Making sure the lid can fully close matters more than most people realize. When trash is stacked too high or sitting on top, cans are often marked as overfilled and can be skipped, which sometimes lead to a return-pickup fee. Anything that spills out usually becomes your responsibility to clean up, and in rural areas it can attract animals, which is never fun to deal with. These little details are easy to overlook when life is busy, but they make a big difference in keeping pickup day on track.
